The year’s first presidential debate was held on June 27 and was disappointing. Some social media users have shared hilarious videos comparing the latest debate to the 2012 presidential debate between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. The debate between two courteous, charming, and well-spoken middle-aged men in 2012 was a stark contrast to the 2024 debate, in which two elderly men exchanged roasts, bickered about golf, and made numerous false or misleading statements. Trump, a convicted criminal, lied his way through the debate, while a listless Biden stumbled his way through his answers and suffered numerous gaffes.

Personally, I think Biden is never the orator we would ideally want, but his speech impediment has a lot to do with that. It seems America has forgotten that rather large part of his life and history, that he has addressed directly and thoughtfully in the past. Yes, Biden is old. That also plays a factor. Trump is old too though! Not as many people want to talk about that. Trump bragged and bragged about how fit he is physically and cognitively and we are just supposed to believe it … Anyway. I am not delusional enough to think that this was a great performance from the President. I do wish he seemed more energetic and on top of his game. I wish he hadn’t used anti-abortion rhetoric or made false statements about military deaths. I am sure his campaign behind the scenes was panicking. I think this is more indicative of this country though, and what we think is important.

To be clear, Biden did offer an abysmal performance in the debate, resulting in serious discussions about the Democratic Party considering another presidential candidate. The biggest issue wasn’t that the president occasionally stuttered or sometimes took a moment or two to gather his thoughts but that he made several major blunders and a few misleading statements. For example, at one point, he bizarrely claimed, “We finally beat Medicare.” At another point, he used misleading anti-abortion terminology when referencing “late-term abortion.” He also made the obviously false statement that no military deaths have occurred under his administration despite the devastating and deadly suicide bombing in Kabul in 2021.

First, here’s some quick background on the alleged comment. As stated by CNN.com, Donald Trump accused Biden of calling Black people super predators back in 1994 during the presidential debates. However, this is not exactly true. The term was said, but not by Biden himself. More so, it was Hillary Clinton who did. Both Biden and Clinton supported the 1994 crime bill, which was one of the worst pieces of legislation ever put out by the United States.

When the issue was brought up, Donald Trump tried to backpedal on his anti-abortion history after having spent two years bragging that he’s responsible for overturning Roe v. Wade. At the same time, he pushed a number of disgusting, completely false anti-abortion talking points. Making things even worse, the moderators made no attempt to fact-check in any way, just letting Trump’s lies run wild. Even worse yet, in Biden’s tepid attempt to push back, he used gross, misleading anti-abortion terminology that have no purpose but to rile people up with misinformation.

The ultra-conservative Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision was a horrible one that rolled back rights in a way that has had very inhumane consequences. Most Americans regardless of party think that abortion should be legal in all or most cases. But the extremists took that right away. The case centers around the 2022 death of Read’s boyfriend, Boston Police Department Officer John O’Keefe. On January 29, 2022, O’Keefe was found unresponsive in the snow outside the home of a Canton, Massachusetts, residence. The incident occurred after O’Keefe and Read had been out drinking with friends, including fellow police officer Brian Albert. After visiting two bars, Read drove O’Keefe to Albert’s home in Canton, where she dropped him off before she went home and went to bed. Jin is the first BTS member to finish his mandatory military service that all young men in South Korea must participate in. Fans have mourned the loss of their favorite male K-pop band, but with Jin’s release, the countdown is now on for the rest to complete their service and return to making music. The accident occurred at the Noël Coward Theatre during a battle scene between the Prince of Wales and Henry Percy in Robert Icke’s modern adaptation of Henry IV. Audience members were noted to have seen McKellen trip near the front of the stage before he fell off the edge. The house lights immediately went up and staff rushed to help the actor as he reportedly cried out. According to The Guardian McKellen is recovering well and is “in good spirits” and expected to make “a speedy and full recovery.” Tuesday night’s performance was also canceled in order to allow the actor to rest. He was initially expected to be back on the stage for Wednesday’s matinee but that performance was also canceled.

This is outrageous, of course, and I say that as someone who grew up in a Southern Baptist Church. I never saw women in leadership at my church unless they were singing in the choir. Even opponents of this ban have leaned into the argument that it’s “unnecessary” because there are already so many steps in place to keep churches from having women pastors and to remove the ones who do. Not exactly a progressive stance.

As a result, it wasn’t long before they began attacking abortion pills, with a coalition of anti-abortion groups and doctors filing a lawsuit seeking to overturn the FDA’s 24-year-old decision to approve mifepristone. After initially seeking to wholly overturn the drug’s approval, the group switched to attempting to severely restrict access to it, including by mail. The case was built on lies and misconceptions about mifepristone and came from a group of people who could not prove the FDA’s decision ever caused them legal injury.
