My Lady Jane, currently available for streaming on Prime Video, is a chaotic and fantasy-esque take on the life of the real Lady Jane Grey, who was the unfortunate ruler of England for only nine days before losing her head.

Don’t worry, though—this adaptation of My Lady Jane, a novel by authors Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows, has none of the historical tragedy and all the romantasy tropes that we all know and love.

Many fans have been hoping that season one of House of the Dragon would not be the last time we saw the faces of young Rhaenyra Targaryen and young Alicent Hightower, played by Milly Alcock and Emily Carey respectively in the first half of the show’s first season.

Since Rhaenyra and Alicent are obviously well and truly grown, most speculated that we could have had a flashback to their girlhood together—but a weirwood dream works just as well.

Costumes are never just clothes simply thrown on the actors and actresses of the cast. Every single one of them is planned and designed to have meaning or tell us something about the character wearing it, and that’s especially true for House of the Dragon just as it was for Game of Thrones.

In a world where everyone’s wardrobes consist of their House colors and where they are all way too obsessed with heraldry, the clothes characters appear in onscreen and their colors have a deeper meaning.

The terrible, tragic aftermath of Blood and Cheese was obviously the highlight of House of the Dragon’s second episode, “A Son for a Son,” and it really brought us into the grief, rage, and guilt that the Greens were feeling—making for one of the best episodes the show has put out to date, in my opinion.

One thing highlighted by the death of little Prince Jaehaerys and its effect on his closest family members is that there really is no family dynamic more twisted than that of the so-called Targtowers. Sure, the Targaryens don’t marry anyone who isn’t related to them and that’s its own major issue, but the way every single member of the Targaryen-Hightower household is an emotional wreck that interiorizes pain and then just spreads more pain around them is just delicious to me. I love seeing them go deeper into it every week. It’s such great storytelling.

Next week’s episode of House of the Dragon, the third of this ongoing second season, is likely going to bring us to the single most cursed place in the entire Seven Kingdoms—and that’s saying something. But honestly, how else would you describe the monstrosity that is Harrenhal?

A monument to the hubris of men and the power of dragons, so cursed that it swallows all who set foot in it be they royalty or smallfolk? But besides being one of my favorite literary devices in the entire A Song of Ice and Fire canon, Harrenhal is also a very strategic castle to hold in any war that sweeps Westeros since the Riverlands are pretty much the heart of the continent, connecting the North to the South and the East to the West—which is why they always end up a smoking pile of ash whenever armies are marching to battle.
