Slowly, all the straggling players which Egghead has set up are coming up to bat. The Straw Hats and their allies could be leaving pretty much any chapter now. But there was one major player we all really wanted to hear more from before they left, and now, we have.

The decades-awaited Elbaf arrival might not be long off. But how long will it be until we know?

Is 2024 the year of Gail Simone? Even considering the GLAAD and Eisner Award-winning comic book writer’s illustrious career, 2024 already has Simone shattering more industry-related glass ceilings.

In March, Marvel Comics revealed that she’s set to take over as the new Uncanny X-Men scribe in August, making her the first female solo writer of the X-Men’s flagship title “in its 61-year history.” Shortly after that news, Simone announced that she’s helming Rebellion Publishing’s resurrection of horror host Misty in an all-new one-off 48-page anthology, Misty 2024, arriving on July 17.

One of the most delightful aspects of One Piece is that there are characters who, when you meet them, seem like single-use characters, and then turn out to be anything but.

Surely, you think, these characters’ usefulness will last just for the arc. But then Eiichiro Oda will bring them back down the line and endear you to them even further. Somehow, these weirdos stay relevant to the story, even into the final saga. Mr. 3 is a prime example of one such character.

In chapter 1117, it seemed like we might be about to leave Egghead. After chapter 1118 said its piece, it still seems like the Straw Hats and company are trying to leave Egghead as quickly as possible. There’s just going to have to be a wee fight first.

And by a “wee fight,” I mean a fight that could very much alter the world of One Piece as we know it. The final panels of chapter 1118 “broke” One Piece in the best possible way. Now, we wait to see whether the outcome of that fight will either change the fabric of the World Government as we know it … or cause casualties among our heroes.

When I was picking the first iteration of my favorite female characters from One Piece, pre-Egghead, I predicted that Jewelry Bonney was going to have a big impact on the story in its final saga. Despite being present during the Revolutionary Army’s revolt during the Reverie, she’d barely been in the story post-time skip.

Turns out, there’s the satisfaction of making a correct prediction, and then the shock of Eiichiro Oda going even further than you imagined. Because in chapter 1118, Jewelry Bonney essentially broke One Piece. And it was spectacular.

One Piece is often a stirring affair. Especially in the Egghead arc, where it feels like anything can happen and anyone could show up. In this arc alone, I’ve laughed, I’ve screamed, and I’ve cried. I’ve said, “Ooooooh shit!” in ascending tones. At the end of chapter 1117, I screamed, “OH COME ON.”

Eiichiro Oda pulled some shenanigans on us this week, friends. And I want to know if this is a matter where someone could bang the proverbial TV until the signal is fixed, or if the signal is truly gone out.

With the Egghead arc, One Piece has officially entered the beginning of the end. The deeper into Egghead you venture, the more you get the feeling that One Piece is actually, really going to end one day. Hell, mangaka Eiichiro Oda once said that when Vegapunk enters the manga, One Piece is in endgame territory.

A fair share of epic shounen series kill off characters in their final acts. It’s a typical climactic move. The question is whether One Piece will do the same. On one hand, at an equivalent moment for the series pre-timeskip—spoilers!—Oda proved he isn’t beyond killing beloved characters with Ace’s and Whitebeard’s deaths at Marineford. On the other hand, One Piece has recently been retconning some key deaths, like Saul’s. (Which can be a good move if done for a reason which advances the story, as this does.)

Chainsaw Man’s second saga, the Academy Saga, differs from the Public Safety Saga in a whole bunch of ways. Without getting into a Pandora’s Box of spoilers, suffice it to say that there’s a whole bunch of new characters. And primary among them are Asa Mitaka and Yoru.

“Asa” is the Japanese word for morning, while “yoru” is the word for night. That poetic contrast describes these characters quite well: an initially timid human and a bloodthirsty devil inhabiting the same body. Night and day.

Tatsuki Fujimoto has never been afraid to take the most brazen possible route. This was true in his previous manga, Fire Punch, and it’s true in his current manga, Chainsaw Man. In fact, that mischievous “f**k it” attitude is a huge reason why those who love Chainsaw Man, love Chainsaw Man.

But even when you know, logically, that anything’s possible in Chainsaw Man, Fujimoto has the uncanny ability to twist his narrative so sharply that he ends up giving his readers one hell of a gut punch. These moments are so sharp that they stick in your mind forever and ever—whether they’re played for comedy, or heartbreak, or both. The vomit kiss. The snowball fight. The birthday cake. Bucky. It just goes to show that this story is about its characters’ obsession with soccer, and we’ve finally gotten a glimpse into Kaiser’s past in the last two chapters of the manga.

Kaiju No. 8 is the latest manga to get the anime treatment, with the first season currently underway. The manga is still ongoing, with our protagonists duking it out against the main antagonist, No. 9. The battle is getting fierce, and all our heroes are giving one hundred percent, but will it be enough?

Kaiju No. 8 is set in a world where kaiju (monsters) appear across Japan on a near-regular basis. The Japan Anti-Kaiju Defense Force has been created to take them down, whenever and wherever they appear. The current poster soldier for the Force is Mina Ashiro, a young woman whose skills and strength are admired by all, particularly Kafka Hibino, her childhood friend who once promised to stand by her side, but has only managed to make it to the clean-up crew. That is until after encountering a kaiju, Kafka is transformed into one himself, an extremely powerful kaiju given the name No. 8.

Kaiju No. 8, is facing off against the humanoid Kaiju No. 9. After utilizing moves he learned through his training, like Troop Style, Hand-to-Hand Combat, Kafka realizes his strategies aren’t going to work given that No. 9 is well aware of these moves, too. Previously, No. 9 possessed Isoa Shinomiya’s memories, and can, as a result, anticipate and combat those moves with extraordinary speed. Chapter 1113 of One Piece, “Stalemate,” changed the world of One Piece for good. It was a single-sentence lore drop of tremendous proportions—all the more pronounced because it was a reveal no one expected. We were all the Navy grunt in the penultimate panel of the chapter, simply asking, “Huh?”

That lore drop also provided one hell of a cliffhanger. Vegapunk’s broadcast has started, and for all his dawdling around wanting coffee and inventing the Keurig in minutes flat so that he could have coffee, he certainly cut to the case once the countdown was over. You assume that chapter 1114 will give him the time to explain himself. There’s a lot to chew on, but we all definitely want more information.

There are currently 14 deluxe volumes of Berserk. Kento Muira, the late, great creator of the acclaimed dark fantasy series created 41 volumes of the story before his death. 13 out of the 14 feature three standard volumes each, and the last deluxe volume features the final two standard volumes plus the Berserk Official Guidebook.
